Bernadette has been an ardent “Arts and Crafts” person for decades. Among her accomplishments are oil painting, seamstress, and doll making. In the 80’s, Bernadette owned her own Arts and Craft store and taught classes in porcelain doll making. She did all the painting, kiln fired all the dolls, and hand made all the clothing. With the advent of the “reborn doll” movement, Bernadette fell in love with the process of making these dolls and toddlers look life-like. By using special paints, and having the ability to use your home oven for the firing process, Bernadette is able to bring to life the personality of these dolls. This system of doll making requires dozens and dozens of layers of specialized paint application beginning with the various washes that will produce the eventual skin coloring, mottling in some cases, veins, wrinkles, freckles, etc….whatever will bring out the personality of that particular doll. After each individual application, the doll needs to be fired in the oven in order to set the paint at that stage of development. The hair on the head and eyelashes (almost always using real human hair) is all inserted by hand, strand by strand, in order to create a more realistic look and feel. Bernadette “births” premies, newborns, and toddlers, each of these coming with their own set of challenges and individual characteristics to make them appear life-like.
